Web Development

“A picture is worth a thousand words.
An interface is worth a thousand pictures.”

- Ben Schneiderman -

Why would you need a website?

  • To establish a presence

Close to 500 million people world-wide have access to the World Wide Web. No matter what your business is you can't ignore 500 million people. Even if you just conduct business within your community, you want to let people know that you are interested in serving them in any way possible. If you don't, your competitors will.

  • To network

A lot of what passes for business is nothing more than making connections with other people. Every smart business-person knows: it's not what you know, it's who you know. Passing out your business card is part of every good meeting and every business-person can tell more than one story how a chance meeting turned into a big deal. What if you could pass out your business card to thousands, maybe millions of potential clients? You can do this 24 hours a day, inexpensively and simply, on the Internet.

  • Because you pour your life into a business you love

Everything about you reflects the passion and commitment you have toward offering the best imaginable service to a customer base that appreciates you.

  • Because you want to be recognized and admired

Why would you need a web application instead of a desktop application?

There has been a long running debate about web applications replacing desktop software applications. While some functions are better suited to web applications, security concerns and legacy systems will prevent desktop software from becoming obsolete.
Some argue that the debate between web applications and desktop applications is pointless; as there is no clear answer. While still others argue that the issue at hand is as much a business and marketing issue, as it is a technological issue.

What Defines a Web Application vs. a Desktop Application?

A web application is an application delivered to users from a web server. Some businesses run web applications on an Intranet, as well. Web applications are becoming more popular due to the widespread use of the web browser as a client.
Some applications are better suited and more likely to become successful as web applications. Web applications designed specifically for search engine optimization, have become increasingly popular. It is easy to understand why web applications that relate to the Internet would prosper, while business applications may have less appeal in a web environment.
A desktop application is a self-contained program that performs a defined set of tasks under the user control. Desktop applications run from a local drive and do not necessary require a network or connectivity to operate or function properly, though if attached to a network desktop applications might use the resources of the network.

Advantages of web applications:

  • no installation

Browser based software never requires installation processes or hard drive space. It lives in a virtual cloud in the Internet and this means that whenever you launch it, it always has the latest version. Ajax has made it possible to deliver Desktop-like look & feel, and functionality, with no loss of performance!

  • updates are seamless

Instead of having to patch each and every individual user, the patches/upgrades are applied to the server and each user will receive the updated version the next time they log in.

  • no legacy

This is a big issue for traditional software vendors. Users who purchase previous versions of a software, almost always will result in legacy versions lying around, versions requiring support what turns out to be costly. The problems relating to legacy software are almost limitless, and often are not efficient for the vendor and/or the customer.

  • access from anywhere with the Internet/intranet

Web applications can be accessed from any computer with an Internet/intranet connection and a browser. The same way that people access their email from any browser, web apps are exactly the same.

  • data is stored remotely
  • cross-platform compatibility

No longer have to be concerned to build technology around a specific platform and limit the productivity/market (or incur additional costs to build for another platform), the browser is the platform.

  • better suitable for low-end computers and require little disk space
  • client computer is better protected from viruses as the app is sandboxed inside a browser

No installation means no viruses. Start shorting all those Anti-Virus stocks! Enough said!

  • piracy-proof

Imagine a world without software piracy. That world is here, and Web Applications are the solution to that problem.

  • mobile is here

Compiled desktop applications are going to have a hard time being adapted for mobile devices. Web apps are ready made (in most cases).
